Every time a new AI model drops, the internet panics: "this time it's real, we're all out of a job." Spoiler: we're still here. The real question is not whether AI is powerful (it is), but what actually happens to our work when a tool writes code. That's what we talked about with Julián Castro in this Howdy Session.
The question every developer asks (quietly)
Let's be honest: the thought has crossed all of our minds. You watch a model generate in seconds something that would have taken you an afternoon, and your stomach tightens a little. But it's worth separating the noise from reality. AI executes incredibly fast, sure. The thing is, executing is not the same as deciding.
3 reasons why they (still) can't replace you
Julián puts it plainly: AI still doesn't understand the full context of a business, it doesn't own the consequences of a decision, and it can't replace the judgment you build over years of mistakes and learning. It can write the function; it can't know whether that function is what the product actually needs. That's where your work stays yours: in the "why," not just the "how."
What to do with this if you're a developer
The takeaway is not to relax, it's to move differently. The developers who will be in the best position are not the ones competing against AI by typing faster, but the ones who use it as one more tool and step up a level: understand the problem, design the solution, make decisions. At Howdy, we look for exactly that profile, the one that combines technical judgment with a drive to grow.
